In 1995, the group was said to be
operating under the name
Shabaab, Muslim Youth
Organisation. It operated from
the Indimi Mosque, located along
Damboa Road, Maiduguri, Borno State and had one Mallam Lawal
as leader and another Mallam
Usman as secretary. It was learnt that in 1999, Lawal
left Nigeria for further studies at
the University of Medina, Saudi
Arabia, thereby yielding the
leadership of the group to the
man known as Mustapha Modu Jon, commonly called Mohammed
Yusuf. Yusuf’s leadership was said to
have opened the group to
political influences and increased
popularity. Although Yusuf’s religious
activism was linked to Kano,
where he had brushes with
popular Islamic clerics, he was said
to have laid the foundation for
the growth of the organisation. Details about the late Yusuf,
however, indicated that he hailed
from Gingir village in Jakusko
Local Government Area of Yobe
State. He was born on 29
January 1970, married four wives and had 12 children. “By 2000, Yusuf had won the
respect and confidence of some
clerics and youths at Indimi
Mosque. He started presiding
over some mosque activities and
along the line, he upstaged all the teachers to emerge a leader.
Many youths who followed him
saw the older clerics as secular
and anti-Sharia. “His followers are largely
illiterate youths who engaged in
petty trading or had dropped
out of school,” a source said. ESTABLISHMENT OF MUHAMMAD
He then established his own
mosque in an area called Railway
Quarters in Maiduguri, while also
extending his preaching to the mosques located at Kandahar,
Unguwar Doki (near Monday
Market) and Millionaire’s
Quarters. Investigators were also told that
by early 2004, the Islamic sect
had grown in states of presence
with Borno, Yobe and Bauchi
being notable and that some of
the converted youths abandoned their studies to join the group.
The ready-made army of
followers were, however, said to
be the Almajiri. It was after 2004 that the sect
leaders were said to have
established links with the Algerian
Salafist Group, now known as Al-
Qaeda in Islamic Magreb, (AQIM),
which gave them training on combat and use of Improvised
Explosive Devices (IEDs). From trainings acquired in AQIM, it
was gathered that members of
Boko Haram were able to show
dexterity in handling of weapons
and manufacture of what is called
“dirty bombs” through IEDs NEW STRATEGY.
It was gathered that
investigations by operatives have
revealed that following recent
arrests of high profile members
of the sect as well as the fortification of most high targets,
including headquarters of
security outfits, a strategy has
been put in place to ensure
precision of attack. Said a source close to the
administration, “recent
discoveries have shown that due
to the fortification of premises of
important buildings set aside as
targets by Boko Haram, strategy has been put in place to simulate
convoys of high profile Nigerians
so as to gain access to target
buildings.” The plan, according to sources, is
to use convoys with sirens to
infiltrate headquarters of
security agencies and local
government area offices of such
agencies to unleash terror. Another strategy is to attack
christian worship centers in
volatile Northern states, this will
trigger reprisal in all parts of the
country, therefore the security
will be highly involved in containing the situation that will
enable Boko Haram to unleash
deadlier attacks to their targets
easily and achieve their aim of
causing general chaos and
As a result of the comments said
to have been attributed to a top
Nigerian security source that the
Boko Haram would soon run out
of suicide bombers, investigators were also said to have confirmed
fresh recruitment drives. It was gathered that the group
now uses internet to propagate
its activities and enhance its
radicalisation and circulation of
extremist ideologies. Already, it was said that the sect
is planning to double its huge
following in such states as Kano,
Bauchi, Adamawa, Yobe, Sokoto,
Plateau, Kaduna and Katsina. The recruitment drive is said to
be targeted at muslims between
ages of 17 and 30, a source said,
adding that the group has also
been recruiting its followers
through prison breaks when freed prisoners are brainwashed
to become adherents. – Nigerian

The extremist Boko Haram sect,
has denied media reports alleging
that four of its members were
arrested Friday, in Kano,
attempting to bomb a Jumaat
mosque at Fagge area of the metropolis. The group, in an statement sent
to media houses Saturday, also
accused the State Security
Service, SSS, of orchestrating
the plot in order to discredit it,
describing such a practice as normal among security services in
many countries. “We are aware these types of
ugly trend exists among security
services such as the SSS, in
order to discredit ‘Gods warriors’
but we are confident they will
never succeed by God’s grace because our aim is to ensure the
existence of a strong Islamic
practice,” the sect said. The group also paid tribute to
Habibu Bama, one of its members
who died of gunshot wounds he
sustained while being captured by
the JTF in Damaturu, Yobe State,
on Thursday. “We are gladdened by the
martyrdom of our brother Habibu
Bama. We pray God accept his
sacrifice, that is the best ending
to any true believer,” the
statement said. The group also reiterated its
earlier warning to media houses
it accused of unbalanced
reporting. “As much as possible we do not
wish to engage the media in any
hot exchanges, the condition we
gave was that any media house
that knows that it cannot relay
messages we circulated the way it is or even refuse to do so
completely, then it should also
not report the government side
even if it is President Goodluck
Jonathan that spoke, otherwise
it will have itself to blame,” it said.

Bishop Oyedepo rains curses on Boko Haram

will fail Following
attack on churches in the northern part of the country by the dreaded Boko Haram sect, the Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church worldwide (a.k.a Winners’ Chapel), Bishop David Oyedepo has rained curses on the sect for its activities in recent past. During last Sunday’s service in Lagos, the cleric declared sudden death, calamity in the camp of the sect before the end of this month. “This month ends their activities in the country and calamity will rain on their camp beginning from now,” he said. The pastor added: “Any attempt to Islamise the country will surely
fail.” While wondering why the sect has been destroying only churches with no single mosque attacked by the sect, he said: “Enough is enough. Whoever is their sponsor, they should expect the wrath of God over them before the end of this month, except, I’m not called by God.” He admonished Christians to start daily prayers on Boko Haram beginning from now and see what God would do before the end of the month. It will be recalled that Winners Chapel was among the churches attacked last week by the Boko Haram sect in Bauchi.

US Drones Air Strikes May Soon Start to Fall on Nigeria, Targeting Boko Haram.

The United States plans to work
with the Nigerian army to help it
combat the threat of the Islamist
group Boko Haram which is
spreading violence in Africa’s
largest oil producer, officials have said.
According to insiders reports, all
options are on the table in this
renewed collaboration with
Nigerian army in smoking out
Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria. However, Washington has still not
decided whether to put the
group on a blacklist of terrorist
organizations – even as gunfire
and explosions erupted in
Maiduguri on Tuesday. “This is an issue of ongoing
internal deliberations within the
United States government,” AFP
news agency quoted Assistant
Secretary of African Affairs
Johnnie Carson as saying after two days of high-level talks with
Nigerian officials in the U.S capital.
“The administration was trying to
make a decision which is
appropriate, rational and useful
while taking into account the significance of any decision that
we might make on Nigeria and
the Nigerian government,” he
Maiduguri is at the center of
Boko Haram’s insurgency, which has claimed more than 1,000 lives
since mid-2009.
Boko Haram claimed responsibility
for a suicide bombing of UN
headquarters in Abuja in August
which killed at least 25 people. Its deadliest attack yet occurred
in January in the northern city of
Kano, when coordinated bombings
and shootings left at least 185
people dead.
The talks — held as part of the U.S-Nigeria Binational Commission
— focused on governance,
security cooperation, energy and
investment and food security.
Opening the talks on Monday,
Deputy Secretary of State Bill Burns said the U.S was “ready to
explore a potential partnership
with the Nigerian army to build
its civil affairs capacity.”
“We are all disturbed by the
repeated scenes of violence in various parts of Nigeria which
threaten to undercut the gains
Nigeria has made,” he said.
“Violent extremist militants like
those associated with Boko
Haram offer no practical program to improve the lives on Nigerians.
They depend on resentment and
neglect,” Burns added.
Without providing concrete
details of what such a
partnership with the Nigerian military could look like, Carson
said the U.S experience in other
areas of conflict could help in
combating the situation in

16 killed, 83 injured in raid on MASSOB offices.

police, army
operatives yesterday killed about 16 members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and injured 83 others as they raided the offices of the group in the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State and its environs. Also arrested during the raid that lasted from Monday night to yesterday morning were over 500 members of the group, including women at different locations in the state. The MASSOB National Director of Information and the Onitsha Region Four Administrator, Uchenna Madu and Chief Arinze Igbani, who briefed reporters over the incident, declared that the raid on their offices by the security operatives was unwarranted and provocative, saying that it was a renewed plot by the army to resume a systematic clampdown on MASSOB. Madu said : “At about 5 p.m., a detachment of security operatives, numbering over 50, allegedly broke into MASSOB office along ‘Pam Pam’ lane at the Onitsha Main Market. They vandalized the office, set the Biafran flag ablaze and then ordered all those in the neighbourhood to lie down in the flood.” He also alleged that the team invaded MASSOB’s central office along Kilometre Seven , Owerri Road, Onitsha where a security meeting of the movement was holding and opened fire on the people, arresting and killing some of the members on the spot. The team also allegedly made away with the bodies of the dead persons. The MASSOB leaders urged the immediate and unconditional release of all its members that were arrested or they be arraigned in court. They also urged security operatives to stop further attacks on MASSOB offices, and that they should respect the sanctity of the Biafran flag. “MASSOB is non-violent, we have assisted the security operatives in fishing out criminals especially in Onitsha where we have handed over 15 notorious armed robbers and car snatchers to the police”, he said. They appealed to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Azubike Ihejirika and the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar to call their
men to order, suggesting that the state Commissioner of Police and the Onitsha 302 Army Commander should always contact the MASSOB leaders whenever they thought they were going beyond control. When contacted, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Emeka Chukwuemeka, confirmed the operation but noted that he was
yet to be officially briefed on the
number of arrests and casualties recorded.
