Fun seekers at a drinking spot at Ado in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Sunday night took to their heels when they sighted a cylinder object wrapped in a polythene bag. Residents of the area, where the object was sighted, also abandoned their homes and stayed in far distances to watch the object. Some residents, who were not aware of the commotion, were duly informed by security operatives, who evacuated them to safe places. A witness, Abdul Lateef, told our reporter that people mistook the object to be an Improvised Explosive Device. He said State Security Service officials, armed policemen and soldiers, cordoned the area and kept their distance from the object. “It seems they were scared to go near the object and watched the area throughout the night to prevent casualties,” he said. A police officer, who participated in the operation, said member of the bomb disposal squad was not in their team and they had to be careful in such an operation. According to him, a stick was used to ascertain what was inside the bag as they lacked the equipment to defuse bombs. He said it was in the morning that the officers summoned courage to check the content of the bag with a long stick. Reacting, Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abayomi Akeremale, said the object was not a bomb but an ordinary cylinder, which he said the owner collected later.
